USAA is awesome. Also, the deposit @mobile is pretty cool too.

I've never had a problem with USAA (although changes in their policies are another matter) I have my insurance and banking with them, and I'm by no means a "high-value" customer.  However every time I call them I get a real person who speaks continental US english and always helps me with whatever I need.  When I got married in January my wife was a little bothered that they had no branches and did almost everything online.  I was able to convince her to stick with them and get her onboard with scanning the few paper checks we get to deposit.

However, about a moth ago USAA released the update to their iPhone app (iTunes link) which included the ability to deposit checks.  I was really interested in this feature and eager to try it out when the bank sent me a check.

Did you read that correctly?  My bank.  Sent me $20.  Because they're awesome.  In full disclosure I had interacted with @USAA_news on twitter and emailed them to join their "iPhone team".  View the letter they sent me with the check here.

Yes, my bank is better than your bank.  What makes this truly awesome is that they make the funds immediately available, amazing, a bank that trusts their customers, and by immediately I don't mean the next business day, I mean as soon as the deposit is done, it's in your account.  (I've also noticed that my direct-deposit from my employer consistently arrives 1 or 2 days before the actual payday.)

So what it is like to deposit a check on your iPhone?  Well, I'm glad you asked.

First fire up the USAA app on you iPhone.  The home screen should look like this:

Next, hit that magic "Deposit@Mobile" button and input the amount of your check.

After thinking for a moment the app gives you some instructions on endorsing the check.

Then, take a picture of your check!

Then the app gives you a quick summary of what's about to happen.

Double check your info and hit Submit.  The app warns you to not interrupt the process until it's finished.

Then look at your conformation screen and enjoy your new money.

So there you have it.  The totally awesome USAA Deposit@Mobile app for iPhone.

Another great thing about USAA: Their rewards program. Not only is it awesome that their debit cards are reward cards, but if you go through their shopping site, and use their affiliate links, you can up to 12pts for every dollar spent. I just bought plane tickets from Travelocity, but went through the USAA MemberShop site, and immediately earned 487 bonus points in addition to the points I will get for using my Amex anyway.
